From an early age, Suryakumar showed a keen interest in cricket and badminton. His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, recognized his potential and encouraged him to focus solely on cricket to pursue a successful career in the sport. At the age of 10, Suryakumar’s family relocated from Varanasi to Mumbai, providing him with more opportunities to nurture his cricketing talent.

Recognizing his exceptional skills, Ashok enrolled Suryakumar in a cricket camp in the BARC colony in Chembur. Later, at the age of 12, he joined the prestigious Elf Vengsarkar academy, where he received guidance from the renowned former Indian cricketer, Dilip Vengsarkar.

Suryakumar pursued his education at the Pillai College of Arts, Commerce, and Science. In 2011, he showcased his exceptional cricketing abilities by winning the MA Chidambaram Trophy for the best Under-22 cricketer of the year. In just seven matches, he scored an impressive 721 runs, averaging 80.11, which included four fifties and a couple of centuries.

Apart from his cricketing prowess, Suryakumar is also known for his love for tattoos. He has adorned his body with various designs and characters, including a beautiful portrait of his parents on his right shoulder.

Domestic Career:

Suryakumar’s journey in domestic cricket began on February 11, 2010, when he played his first List-A match in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for his home state, Mumbai, against Gujarat. He showcased his batting skills by scoring a quickfire 41 off just 37 balls, emerging as the second-highest scorer of the match.

A few months later, he made his T20 debut for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Hyderabad. However, he could only manage a score of 5 as his team suffered a significant 7-wicket defeat.

At the end of 2010, Suryakumar made his debut in first-class cricket against Delhi, and he made sure to make it a memorable one. Displaying his prowess with the bat, he scored a magnificent 73, which turned out to be the highest individual score of the match.

The 2011-12 Ranji season proved to be a breakthrough for Suryakumar as he dominated Mumbai’s run charts. He amassed a staggering 754 runs in just 9 matches at an average of 68.54. In only his third match of the season, he hit a double-century against Orissa and followed it up with another century in the next match. Additionally, he scored over 1000 runs at the U23 level in the same season, securing the MA Chidambaram Trophy.

Ahead of the 2014-15 Ranji season, Suryakumar was appointed as the captain of the Mumbai team. Despite scoring 487 runs at an impressive average of 53.88, he decided to step down from captaincy following Mumbai’s loss to Tamil Nadu by an innings and 44 runs. He wanted to shift his focus back to his batting, which he considered as his primary strength.

Surprisingly, Suryakumar was reinstated as the captain of Mumbai just a week before the start of the

2019-20 season, having been dropped from the squad in the previous season. He displayed his leadership skills by guiding the team to victory with a blistering knock of 94 in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Group B Super League match against Karnataka.

In the 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Suryakumar was appointed as the captain of Mumbai, further cementing his reputation as a skilled leader in addition to his exceptional batting abilities.

IPL Career:

Suryakumar’s talent did not go unnoticed, and he was signed by the Mumbai Indians in the 2012 season of the IPL. However, due to the presence of veteran players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Kieron Pollard, he had limited opportunities to showcase his skills and was mostly overlooked throughout the season.

In the 2014 IPL auction, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) acquired Suryakumar for INR 70 lakhs. He played a crucial role in the team’s title-winning campaign, scoring 164 runs in his debut season.

Suryakumar made headlines in the 2015 IPL when he played a match-winning innings of 46 runs off just 20 balls against the Mumbai Indians, overshadowing Rohit Sharma’s classy knock of 98.

Returning to the Mumbai Indians in the 2018 IPL mega auction, Suryakumar fetched the highest bid for an uncapped player, earning a whopping 3.2 crores. In the 2019 season, he played 16 matches, scoring 424 runs at an average of 32.61, with a highest score of 71.

In the remarkable IPL 2020 season, Suryakumar displayed his exceptional skills, accumulating 480 runs at an average of 40 and a strike rate of 145.01. He emerged as the second-highest run-getter for the Mumbai Indians, playing a vital role in their consecutive IPL title victories.

Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, Suryakumar was retained by the Mumbai Indians as their prized fourth-choice player. He started the season in great form, scoring 303 runs in just eight matches at a strike rate of 145.67. Unfortunately, an injury cut short his campaign, and he was ruled out for the rest of the season.

International Career:

After toiling hard in domestic cricket and the IPL for nearly a decade, Suryakumar finally received his well-deserved recognition and an opportunity to represent the senior Indian men’s team. He made his international debut in a T20I match against England in Ahmedabad on March 14, 2021. Although he didn’t get a chance to bat in his debut match, he showcased his talent by scoring an impressive 57 runs in his first T20I innings during the fourth match of the series.

Since then, Suryakumar has consistently impressed with his performances. He was a part of India’s squad in the 2021 T20 World Cup, playing a crucial role in four matches and scoring 42 runs in three innings.

During the final T20I match against England in Nottingham, India faced the daunting task of chasing a mammoth score of 216 to whitewash their opponents 3-0. With India’s top-order batsmen falling early in the chase, Suryakumar took charge and showcased his elegant batting skills. His scintillating knock of 117 runs off just 55 balls, including 14 boundaries and six sixes, kept England at bay until the penultimate over, when he was dismissed by Moeen Ali.

Suryakumar’s exceptional performances in bilateral series leading up to the 2022 T20 World Cup earned him a spot in

India’s squad for the prestigious tournament.

ODI Career:

Four months after making his T20I debut, Suryakumar was included in India’s second-string limited-overs squad for the tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021. He made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka on July 18 and remained unbeaten on 31.

As of October 2022, Suryakumar has played 13 One-Day Internationals, amassing 340 runs at an average of 34, including a couple of fifties. His highest score of 64 came against West Indies in February 2022. Notably, Suryakumar became the first batsman to score 30-plus scores in his first six ODI innings.

Family Background:

Suryakumar’s passion for cricket and badminton developed during his childhood. His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, encouraged him to focus on one sport and pursue a career in it. When Suryakumar was 10 years old, his family moved from Varanasi to Mumbai.
