Wrestling Federation of India elections to be held on July 6
The much-anticipated elections of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) are scheduled to take place on July 6, as announced by the returning officer in a recent notification. Following the appointment of retired high court judge Mahesh Mittal Kumar by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the election process is set in motion.
This article delves into the key details surrounding the upcoming elections, including the nomination process, composition of the electoral college, and potential challenges faced by the WFI.
Nomination Process and Electoral College:
The last date for the submission of two nominations from each state and union territory, in order to form the electoral college, is fixed as June 19. Scrutiny of the nominations will be completed by June 22. Each state unit is entitled to send two representatives, with each representative possessing one vote.
Therefore, the electoral college for the WFI elections will comprise 50 votes. However, certain state bodies previously dissolved by the WFI have expressed their desire to participate in the elections. The returning officer will carefully examine the credentials of the faction representatives to determine their eligibility to vote.

Election Timeline:
The nominations for the elections can be submitted from June 23 to June 25. Following this, the nominations will be prepared and displayed, and the scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on June 28. Candidates will have the opportunity to withdraw their nominations between June 28 and July 1. The final list of candidates contesting the elections will be unveiled on July 2.
Election Categories:
The WFI elections will witness the selection of individuals for various important positions within the organization. These positions include the president, senior vice-president, four vice-presidents, secretary-general, treasurer, two joint secretaries, and five executive members. The outcome of these elections will significantly shape the future direction of the WFI.
Challenges and Controversies:
There have been speculations surrounding the inclusion of rival factions within state bodies in the polls. In Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Karnataka, two different state bodies have reportedly submitted names for inclusion in the voters’ list. The returning officer’s critical task will be to determine which factions will be eligible to participate in the elections.
Additionally, the eligibility of family members or associates of outgoing WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to contest the elections remains a significant point of debate. The Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur, has reassured wrestlers that no relatives of Brij Bhushan will be allowed to enter the electoral race.
